While talking to Jeremy Boreing for a video promoting Lady Ballers Ben Shapiro drops a confession that he originally hoped to make the film a documentary of men joining women's sports for a competitive advantage by simply proclaiming they are women. He goes on to admit that it wasn't that simple & no one was willing to go through what would be required to actually be able to compete in women's sports.
The funniest part of the movie was just that, it's 40 year old men that have to pretend to be better than actual athletes. The Reily Gaines cameo specifically features her swimming & the male character pretending to be a woman already being at the other end of the pool to help her out of the water. These guys aren't athletic, but seem to think they would be able to beat female athletes on the shear basis that they're men.
It leads you to kinda get this second hand embarrassment from the entire film, while they basically missed the mark on trying to be transphobic, where it mostly comes off as early 2000s misogyny instead. I wouldn't even say it's triggering, but I'm also not really the demographic they hope to "trigger," there were only 3 characters specifically satirizing liberals, & the jokes about black people were more cringe than offensive.
All to say not actually sure if their intention was to make fun of conservatives for actually thinking this is what happens, but it kinda comes off that way as the cast all play conservative men taking advantage of a system that isn't based in reality. Due to this it leads me to believe that the entire film was made just so they could shoehorn in product placements for their “non-woke” alternative products, which culminated in a direct thirty second advert for their shaving razor “Jeremy's Razors” in the middle of the film, while others were more subtlety placed like their chocolate bars.
DailyWire is the epitome of the conservative grievance economy, where they're directly picking an outrage people have at perceived “wokeness” in a product & offering a direct clone under the guise that their item is “anti-woke,” whatever that actually means. Whether that means Jeremy’s Razors instead of Dollar Shave Club/ Gillette, Jeremy's Chocolate instead of Hershey's, Jeremy's Productions instead of Hollywood, or BentKey Entertainment their streaming alternative to Hulu/ Netflix. (Creative branding by the way) The underlying purpose is however not an ideological one, it's simply grifting the outraged for their money, which is obvious in the film Lady Ballers. They aren't going for actually upsetting someone, they're simply saying “the line,” the talking point knowing that it's what the audience wants. Pure fan service knowing that doing anything else wouldn't make their viewers laugh or clap. Worst part, is that while they're trying to criticize Hollywood for their cheesiness & lazy writing, they also pick the most Hollywood way to end the film by having Jeremy's character Ron's child & other girls come play in the second half of the final basketball game, celebrating parenting or something like that & it comes off more awkward than the rest of the film.
